NOFIRNO specified for sealing cable conduits in NY’s Joralemon Tube
The NOFIRNO sealing system of Beele Engineering has been specified for sealing cable conduits in the 108 year old Joralemon Tube in New York. nyta metro_small.jpg

Vital equipment and components in the 1.6-mile-long tube were heavily damaged by inundation caused by Superstorm Sandy in October 2012. Following the first temporary repair work an exhaustive examination of systems and components determined that the facility was in need of significant permanent repair, upgrade, and fortification against future storms. The $75.4 million recovery work includes the replacement and upgrade of power, communications, and fiber optic cables, installation of emergency facilities and fire extinguishers as well as flood doors and panels, replacement of tunnel lighting fixtures, upgrading substation, tunnel lighting room, and equipment and improving the pump room.

As part of the multi-year project all sealings for the cable conduits will be newly installed. The New York Transit Authority specified the NOFIRNO system of Beele Engineering for this. This is one of the many underground and tunnel projects where NOFIRNO was chosen. In many of these projects the service life tests of the system, in which a service life of 50 years was determined, are a decisive factor. The system ensures that all cable entries and cable penetrations in the tube are reliably and safely sealed and protected against water and fire. NOFIRNO not only is fire-safe and watertight but also gas and smoke tight which is an important feature in tunnel and tube projects.

An important challenge in this project is to perform the work with least inconvenience to commuters and without effecting normal ridership. The NOFIRNO system contributes to this by the fact that it is easy to install. The rehabilitation work on the Joralemon Tube is currently in progress with the goal of completion in 2017.
